Welcome to Franklinton!

Franklinton is the oldest community in Central Ohio. It has a proud pioneer tradition and many dedicated and active community leaders. Long plagued by flooding and other ills common to the center-city, it is now protected by a floodwall and on the leading edge of Columbus neighborhood revitalization.

East Franklinton Plan Community Meetings!

In the Spring of 2011 at his State of the City address, Mayor Michael B. Coleman announced a new initiative to attract the creative class to East Franklinton. Numerous individual projects were at the beginning stages or underway, and it was decided that the opportunity was right to tie these projects together and provide added energy to move revitalization along a stronger trajectory.

The East Franklinton Creative Community District Plan is a planning effort with several major components: public engagement to understand the values and interests of the community, as well as the arts community in growing a “creative district”; very detailed market studies to understand fully the residential, retail and office markets and their potential in this district; an urban design approach to guaranteeing reinvestment occurs in an organic fashion commensurate with the grittiness of East Franklinton; and an implementation strategy that brings all parties together to jointly move forward on a common vision.

The city has established a working group with representatives from the Planning, Economic Development and Housing Divisions, Franklinton Development Association, Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, and developer Urban Smart Growth. The city has hired a multi-disciplinary consulting team being led by Goody Clancy, an urban design and planning firm headquartered in Boston (Goody Clancy has done several plans in Columbus, working with the city on Weinland Park Neighborhood Plan and the University/High Street Plan).

The planning process will be about 12 months in duration and a final plan should be proposed as an amendment to the Franklinton Plan (2003) in the summer of 2012. This website will be used to post numerous documents as the plan unfolds, as well as meeting notices and surveys.

PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE

Please join us December 13th and 14th from 6:30-8-30 p.m. for a two-part public workshop to develop a plan for East Franklinton. We will discuss efforts to establish a creative district and other ideas for the neighborhood’s future.

The two sessions will build upon each other so participants are encouraged to attend both nights – but you can still participate if you can only attend one of the sessions. Also, during the day of December 14th (9am-4pm) there will be an open house where anyone can drop in and learn about the planning process, see work in progress, and contribute ideas.

Public input is critical to the plan’s success. Please help spread the word about this opportunity by circulating the attached flyer and personally inviting everyone that you think may be interested!

Art Events in Franklinton This Weekend!

We wanted to share two cool art events happening in our neighborhood this weekend!

On Friday, July 15, check out “Absolutely Absurd,” a party and fundraiser for the Ohio Art League at the warehouse at Thought Co headquarters at 566 W. Rich Street!

 From the Ohio Art League:

All proceeds benefiting the OAL
$20 at the door
Cash bar
Come Dressed to Perplex!

Join the Ohio Art League for our second annual ABSOLUTELY ABSURD shindig where the guests become the art with a whacked out mash-up of unexpected outfits. In a city this creative, we know that attendees will knock your socks off with their most innovative, preposterous and absurd costume designs.

This year will be infused with even more of the unexpected because we asked artists to submit proposals for a wild and wacky performance, video or installation. So, when you’re able to break away from the dance floor, the bar, or ooohhing and aahhhing over everyone’s costumes, check out amazing productions by some of Ohio’s most creative talents.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Performances by Dr. Grimaldi, Button, RainTrain and more, video, installations, a hot dance party, and an eclectic crowd of artists, patrons and supporters of Ohio’s rich cultural community.

Sponsors:
Hotcards Columbus
Finlandia vodka
Herradura tequila
Woodford Reserve Bourbon
Chambord

On Saturday, July 16  join the Franklinton Arts District and Franklinton Gardens as they kick off the first of two Saturdays for their Garden Mural project. From Franklinton Gardens:

The Garden Mural Project is a first time collaboration between the Franklinton Gardens and the Franklinton Arts District (FAD).

Come out and join us in the garden on Saturday July 16th and Saturday July 23rd at the Avondale Garden at 290 Avondale Avenue while local artists create community themed murals that promote the vision of a just and peaceable Franklinton. This is a free community event where we can watch local artists create the mural, listen to live music, sample healthy food, and receive information on community gardening and local arts programs.

Franklinton Arts District and Franklinton Gardens Partner on Mural Project

The Garden Mural Project is a first time collaboration between the Franklinton Gardens and the Franklinton Arts District (FAD).  We are looking for individual artists, or a team of artists, to design and paint a mural over the course of two Saturdays in July.  This is a free community event in which neighborhood residents will be able to watch the artists at work, listen to live music from local musicians, eat free samples of healthy foods, and receive information on community gardening and local arts programs.

We are seeking community-themed murals that promote the vision of a just and peaceable Franklinton – one complete with safe streets, fair housing, equality, health food access, alternative transportation, environmental sustainability, etc.

The Franklinton Arts District will be selecting a total of ten 4’ x 8’ panels for this event.

Artists, or artist groups, may propose a 1, 2, or 3-panel mural.  Each panel is 4’ x 8’ and needs to be displayed horizontally.  Paint, brushes, and supplies will be provided.  All participating artists must be able to commit to painting during the 11-am – 6pm duration on both Saturdays.

Artists will be compensated with food, drinks, goodies, and cash prizes.

Email Submissions – New Extended Deadline Monday, July 11th

Please submit the following information by Monday, July 11th to bellachroma@gmail.com.   Late submissions will not be accepted.

  1. Your name or names, each with address, phone number, and email address

  1. 5 images of your artwork for an individual, or 10 images of artwork from artists in the group.  (jpg images at 72 dpi.)

  1. An image list detailing the artist(s), title, medium, and year for each image submitted.

  1. A brief statement on what you propose to paint for your mural, and how it relates to the community theme.   (500 words or less)

  1. We are working to pair interested artists with talented middle and high school students to assist with the murals.  Please indicate in the email if you would be interested in having a young helper from Franklinton.

Please contact Sarah Weinstock, President, Franklinton Arts District (FAD) with any questions at bellachroma@gmail.com.
